This year the 4th of July weekend was jam-packed with fun in the sun. Beautiful weather and positive energy in the air had us getting after it the best we could. First we enjoyed an incredible firework display over the town of Crested Butte on the night of the third, followed by an ascent of Purple Mountain in the West Elk Wilderness on the morning of the fourth, and finally a 3-hr drive to Glenwood Springs for a surf session on the Colorado River. That’s right, I said surf. And not in a kayak, like we see all the time on the rivers. I mean stand-up surfing. Much trickier than surfing in the ocean, as the water flows very fast and much of the technique is in holding your position on the wave and not being sucked down-river. Lesson learned for next time: life-vest would necessitate much less swimming, thus much less panic/fear. Then again, “Respect comes from admiration of fear”. And “fear lives here”. Enjoy the slideshow highlighting the good times.
Some of the surfers featured within are acquaintances from the riverbank. To those I told could find their pics on my site: sorry it took so long to get them up.
